It’s the most festive time of the year; if devotion is making the buzz, can style statement be far behind? What to flaunt and how to stand out. Hear it from the experts:
Jyoti Kashmiri (Fashion Designer) – Indo western gowns, long flowing skirts with crop tops are trending this season. For traditional evenings, stylish kurtis can be paired with palazzo skirts or cigarette pants. For the all times sari lover’s, soft georgette, net and handloom saris and mekhela chadors are always a first choice. The newly married brides can choose colours like red, royal blue or hot pink. Men can opt for Indo-western kurtas with jeans. It can be teamed up with waist coats in bohemian prints or solid colours to add to the festive mood.
Moonmee Boruah (Fashion Designer) – This Durga Puja, opt for lighter hues. Keep garments minimalist and comfortable. Go for extremely light-weight attires with perfect blend of ethnic and western designs. This season, appliqués, prints, embroidered styles, sleeves with slits, long slim cut-offs and cigarette pants are in trend.
Kanchan Sabarwal (Fashion Designer) - Saris or any traditional outfit is the best to go for any festive occasion, whatever trend maybe on the go. However, this year more than saris, it’s the blouses that are taking all the attention away. Blouses with various necklines and sleeve designs like ruffled, bell sleeves, leg - o mutton to name a few. Other than that kurtis with long mid-cut slits, tunics, gowns with an indo-western fusion mix is also the talk of the town.
Bidyut Bikash Bhagawati (Fashion Designer) - Festivals for me are always associated with bright colours. However, this season instead of regular colours of red and blues, pastels like grey, golden brown, shimmery baby pink, peace etc are more in demand. Long anarkali kurtas are more taken over by lehengas. Instead of regular fabrics of silk, western traditional designs work more on lehengas and saris. Lehengas can be teamed up with crop tops, high neck or bra cut blouses. Jacket blouses are eye-catchers of the season. The recent trend focuses on lighter designs on the lehenga, keeping the blouses heavy and well-designed. To cut out time in dressing, this year the designers have come up with a very new concept of readymade hassle free saris and mekhela’s. The catch of this outfit is that it the pleats are already made and one needs to wear it just like pants. A hook or zip holds the sari together. As for the mekhela, the chador is also attached to it; one just needs to put it in place. This mainly comes in western materials and muga or eri fabric. Self designs are also in trend with the base in light colours and work sequins are done in one coat darker then the base coat. Saris with eco-friendly designs with peacock, lotus, rajasthani prints or other theme based works are also found in the market. Lehengas can be in particularly teamed with Marathi styled nose-rings. Western outfits like gowns, dresses are great for evening wear and if teamed up with oxidized or fusion jewellery can really stand out. Black is always a favourite of all when it comes to evening colours.
Jitu Barman (Make Up Artist) - For the daytime, it’s better to keep it subtle and light, in an effortless manner. Creating a light base with primer and foundation dabbed with compact to keep it dry and even, and keeping the lips nude with light shades of gloss. The eyes can be made dramatic by applying mascara and pastel eye shadow, avoiding eye liner or kajal. As for evenings and night, the lips can be dabbed with red matte or a shade darker than red. Even mauve colour is very trendy and goes almost with all outfits. The face needs to glow. Hence the base should be well moistured with foundation and primer. Blusher can be used in shades of light brown or pink depending on the person’s skin tone. Since the mood is of festivity, shimmery eye-shadows also can be applied.
