The Department of Bioscience, Asian Institute of Management & Technology organized a one day Symposium on “Bioresources and Renewable Energy” on 14th May, 2018. The Keynote speakers for the session were Dr. D. K. Jha, Professor, Department of Botany, Gauhati University, Dr. M. C. Kalita, Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Gauhati University, Dr. M. R. Khan, Associate Professor, Institute of Advanced Studies in Science & Technology (IASST), Baragaon, Guwahati and Dr. Supriyo Sen, Assistant Professor, Department of Life Science, Assam Don Bosco University, Sonapur.

The speakers at the event expressed their views on world energy crisis, its increasing prices and constant deterioration of the environment. They also presented their ideas on how these crises can be resolved in the upcoming years.

The dignitaries highlighted the role of microbes in biodiesel production by converting the biomass into various forms. Bio-resources are one of the most abundant and cheapest renewable energy sources.  The North Eastern region of India is rich in biodiversity due to high rainfall and sunlight. This region can be addressed as the geographical gateway for endemic flora as well as fauna. The conservation of the resources and their utilization with the modern techniques can be a healthier substitute for fossil fuels and mitigation of greenhouse gas emission.

The research scholars and students of various Colleges/universities of this region like the Assam Don Bosco University, Cotton University, Handique Girl’s College, B.Borooah College, Pandu College participated in this event.

The goal of the symposium was to discuss and learn about the utilization of the natural resources as an alternative for the fossil fuels.
