GUWAHATI: The Coordination Committee of the Tribal organisations had called for a 12-hour complete shutdown in Assam against the bill to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities of the state. However, city life seems to go on as usual without much hassle or disturbance.
Vehicles have been moving along the busy Guwahati-Shillong road as usual. The effect of the bandh is mostly being seen in Kokrajhar, Jagiroad, Morigaon, Orang, Rowta and Majbat. The bandh has received mixed reactions in the state, with groups protesting to show their agitations. The All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU) was one of the organisation’s that supported the bandh.

The central government’s resolve to pass the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Amendment Bill 2019 has outraged certain communities in the state. The communities that have been proposed to be included in the ST category are Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak and tea tribes of Assam.
In regard to this move, the tribal organisations have alleged that the central government’s move will eliminate the real tribal people of the state.
