Distress over Citizenship Bill; People on streets throwing stones, several injured and security upped in the Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Several indigenous organizations, including the supporters of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) had staged a protest in front of the Janata Bhavan in Dispur on Wednesday, January 9 against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. 

People came in groups and vandalised billboards, signage, traffic cones and also pelted stones at various security personnel. The police personnel chased after the protestors and took them into custody and several agitators were also injured in Dispur when the police tried to control the crowd. 

Elaborate security arrangements have been lined up and additional police personnel have been deployed by the Assam Police in the city following today’s protests and vandalism of various private and public properties.
