GUWAHATI: The Kamrup Express, train number 15959, managed to avoid a potential disaster by avoiding collision with a herd of approximately 60 elephants on Wednesday, October 16.

Located on the Guwahati-Lumding route, the incident occurred at around 8:37 PM, between the Habaipur and Lamsakhang stations. Upon noticing the herd crossing the tracks, the loco pilots swiftly applied the emergency brakes, thereby stopping the train just in time to prevent a fatal collision with the elephants.
This timely action was further aided by the Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS). It is an advanced, eco-friendly solution designed to protect wildlife, as it can monitor up to 40 km on either side of the tracks, providing real-time updates for the locomotive team to implement necessary actions.
The N.F. Railway has already installed the IDS system in several elephant corridors across the region, and plans are underway to extend its use across more areas. In addition to the IDS, N.F. Railway has taken further steps to enhance visibility for train drivers by clearing long bushes and forested areas along the tracks.
During 2023, N.F. Railway has already managed to save 414 elephants, and as of 16th October, 2024, another 383 have been saved.
Ongoing coordination with the Forest Department, including joint action forces, has also strengthened the railways’ overall efforts to protect wildlife.
