Assam To Develop Waterway Network Connecting Seven Temples

 

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has secured approval from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways to create a network of 10 waterways, connecting seven significant temples in the state. The initiative, set to operate on a "Hop on & Hop off" basis, will be developed under the Sagarmala Scheme with an investment of ₹645.56 crore. The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, has approved the ambitious project.

This network will link prominent temples, including the Kamakhya Temple, an ancient Shakti Peeth attracting global devotees for its unique rituals and the Ambubachi Mela. Other notable temples include the Pandunath Temple, associated with the Mahabharata’s Pandavas, and the Ashwaklanta Temple, renowned for its serene atmosphere and ties to Lord Krishna. The Umananda Temple, situated on the Island in the Brahmaputra River, will also be part of this initiative, offering visitors a blend of spirituality and scenic beauty.

Additionally, the plan includes the Doul Govinda Temple, celebrated for its vibrant Holi festivities, and the Chakreshwar Temple in Hajo, a spot steeped in historical significance. The Auniati Satra in Majuli, a 17th-century Vaishnavite monastery known for its cultural and religious heritage is also a part of this network.

The waterways aim to boost river tourism and provide a unique travel experience for devotees and visitors. The development will include 12 floating terminals, two multimodal terminals at Pandu and Jogighopa, and two permanent terminals at Bogibeel and Dhubri, according to reports.
