Assam lifts ban on fish procurement, sample tests to continue

GUWAHATI: Earlier on 10th July, Pijush Hazarika, Minister of State (MoS) for Health and Family Welfare, Assam announced ban on procurement of fish from outside Assam after sample tests confirmed presence of Formalin in them.

The ban on procurement of fish was lifted on July 22 and hereafter traders can begin procuring fish from Andhra Pradesh or any other state.

In a bid to tackle the menace of contaminated fish procured from outside the state, stringent steps are being put in place by the Assam government to lift the ban on fish procured from other states.

“After 10 days, we will again conduct drives and if formalin is still found, we will punish them under the provisions of Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. The original sellers will be contacted through the cash memos.” said Pijush Hazarika.
