3rd Edition of Khelo India Begins today in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The 3rd edition of Khelo India Youth Games 2020 will officially begin in Guwahati today, January 10.

The event will be inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Sports Minster Kiren Rijjiu.

The Opening ceremony will be held on January 10 from 6pm at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai.

Although speculations of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Guwahati were anticipated, on January 9 Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, " We have invited PM Modi but there is no official confirmation of his presence, elsewise I or CM Sonowal would have called a press meet on the same."

Commissioner and Secretary, PHE Deptt and functional area head of the Opening and Closing ceremonies, Siddharth Singh told G Plus that Shankar Mahadevan and V Unbeatables of America’s Got Talent fame would be performing in the opening ceremony.

“Earlier Sunidhi Chauhan was scheduled to perform but had to cancel due to personal reasons,” Singh added.

While speaking about the games, he said, “It is going to be one of the biggest ceremonies that has been done across India in any sporting event. It is going to be befitting the occasion it is.”

More than 500 artists will be performing honouring the Assamese tradition. Preparations are going on for more than a month.

There are more than 400 cast members, around 400 technical support staffs and around 100 core team members working on ground from the opening ceremony.
