3 months deadline for State to suggest policies for Transgenders

GUWAHATI: In a landmark judgment, the Gauhati High Court asked the State Government constituted core committee for addressing transgender issues to make an in-depth study of the problems faced by the community here and suggest measures in terms of policy-making and forming welfare bodies within three months.

The High Court on Tuesday gave the judgment in accord to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL 15/2017), filed by Swati Bidhan Baruah, Founder of All Assam Transgender Association versus the State Government, State Social Welfare Department and The Union of India.

Assam Government did not have any policy or a commission for the transgender despite Supreme Court's ruling.

It had an expert committee, comprising senior officers and persons who have knowledge regarding transgender issues, but it had been defunct since its inception in 2015.
