Tender coconuts well versed for their refreshing and naturally hydrating nature are now being sold at expensive prices, come their rising demand in the summer.
The rates of tender coconuts have been seen taking a sudden spike. Talking to GPlus, a fruit vendor in Beltola said, “The rates have gone up now as more people are consuming it due to the hot weather. I am selling a piece for ₹60. But, I believe this is the same throughout the city or even more at certain places.”
“The price of tender coconuts is a bit high as compared to before when we would get them for like 30 or 40 rupees, per piece. But, what to do? The requirement is such now,” says Shakib Ali a local resident of Beltola.
The tender coconuts are mainly sourced from Morigaon, Goalpara, or Bhutan. And also at times sourced from wholesale sellers at various places in the city. Even though daily profit is made by the sellers, sustaining their livelihood may still be a challenge.
Seasonal fluctuations also determine the prices of the tender coconuts. The GMC also enforces a licensing fee of ₹50 per stall. Despite these challenges, the demand for coconut water remains high, due to it being a healthy alternative to aerated beverages or sugary drinks, which in no way aid the human body.
