GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to deport 17 foreigners held in an Assam detention centre.

Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan, upon reviewing a report from the State Legal Services Authority, stated that these individuals faced no charges. They urged immediate deportation, considering the prolonged detention of many foreigners.

"We are of the view that Union of India must take immediate steps for deporting these 17 foreigners as there is no offence registered against them," the bench said.
Previously, in April, the court instructed an assessment of detainees held for over two years and dispatched a team to inspect detention centres. This decision comes in response to a plea seeking release of those detained for over two years.
