89.71% Of Govt Schools In Assam Lack Internet Connectivity, Parliament Told

GUWAHATI: Around 89.71% of government schools in Assam lack internet access, which has raised concerns about the state of digital education in the region. Tripura’s situation is similarly alarming, with only 16% of government schools having internet connectivity while leaving 84% without access.

This recent report, presented in Parliament by Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Choudhury highlighted the broader issue of digital infrastructure in education, as 76% of government schools nationwide do not have internet facilities. This totals 7,75,386 institutions.

States of central India including Uttar Pradesh (8.81%), Uttarakhand (15.62%), and Madhya Pradesh (17.77%) continue to face challenges in providing digital connectivity to schools as well. Bihar remains the most affected, with only 5.85% of schools having internet access, while leaving 95% disconnected.

The situation is further exacerbated in Tripura by teacher shortages and high dropout rates. This lack of internet access has restricted digital learning opportunities for the state, limiting students’ ability to engage in online education, which has become a key factor in modern learning environments.

The findings contrast with the central government’s Digital India initiative, which aims to integrate technology into governance and education.
