Assam Panchayat Polls: BJP Manifesto Focuses On Rural Development, Digital Connectivity, Farmers

GUWAHATI: Riding on confidence ahead of Assam’s two-phase Panchayat elections on May 2 and 7, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unveiled its election manifesto on Saturday, April 26 focusing heavily on rural development, agricultural reforms, and digital empowerment. The unveiling ceremony at the party headquarters in Guwahati was attended by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BJP president Dilip Saikia, Cabinet Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, Guwahati MP Bijuli Kalita Medhi, and other senior leaders.

Addressing party workers and the press, the chief minister highlighted the BJP’s efforts in strengthening the Panchayati Raj system since taking power in 2016. “This time, too, we are confident of a strong showing. The signs are clear — we have already secured over 350 Anchalik Panchayat seats uncontested, along with a similar trend at the gram panchayat level," he said.

Taking a sharp dig at the opposition Congress, Sarma claimed that the Congress would be virtually erased from several parts of the political map after the polls.

State BJP president Saikia echoed this sentiment, underlining the importance of the Panchayat elections for the party’s long-term vision. "People often ask if this is the quarter-final or semi-final ahead of the 2026 assembly polls. For the BJP, every election is a final," he asserted.

The party’s manifesto, titled ‘Sankalp Patra’, reflects extensive ground-level feedback, Saikia said, citing over 3,000 emails and numerous messages received via a dedicated WhatsApp helpline.
Key Highlights of BJP’s Panchayat Election Manifesto:

Faster Relief for Farmers: Farmers will receive compensation for crop damage at 33% loss, instead of the current 60% threshold.

Support for Small Farmers: Waiver of taxes for haat bazaars, improved seed and fertiliser distribution, and solar-powered irrigation solutions.

Village Infrastructure Boost: Construction of small dams and provision of tractors to every village to enhance mechanisation.

Digital Connectivity: High-speed optical fibre internet across all gram panchayats to bridge the digital divide.

Modern Amenities: Establishment of modern crematoriums in every village.

Continued Welfare Initiatives: Strengthening programmes like Nijut Maina, Mission Vasundhara, the Mahila Udyamita Scheme, and expanded support for youth entrepreneurship and BPL families.

As polling day nears, the BJP is banking on a blend of rural welfare promises, digital modernisation, and aggressive outreach to consolidate its grassroots dominance and build momentum towards the 2026 assembly elections.
