Supreme Court attains full strength, four new judges sworn in

GUWAHATI: Four new Supreme Court judges had sworn in on Friday, May 24, thereby allowing the highest court in India to attain the full strength of 31.

The new judges, Justices Aniruddha Bose, AS Bopanna, Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai and Surya Kant, were administered the oath of office by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

It should be noted that the five-member collegium, which was headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, had earlier in May, overruled the Centre’s objection to the appointment of Justice Bose of Jharkhand High Court and Justice Bopanna of Gauhati High Court, whose names were recommended on April 12.

The centre had objected to their “elevation citing seniority and representation of regions as the reasons,” according to a report by ANI.
