'Dry Days' Declared In Guwahati From May 5-7

 

GUWAHATI: The Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has declared a 'dry day' from 5:00 PM on May 5 to 5:00 PM on May 7, 2024, in anticipation of the 3rd phase of the General Elections 2024. This measure comes as the district prepares for the upcoming parliamentary constituency elections scheduled to take place in Guwahati on May 7. Additionally, the district has declared another 'dry day' for the counting of votes on June 4.

The order, issued by the Office of the District Commissioner (Excise Branch), stipulates that all wholesale warehouses, bonded warehouses, Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) retail shops (‘OFF’ & ‘ON’), and country spirit shops within the Kamrup Metropolitan District will be closed during this period. This temporary ban on the sale and distribution of alcohol is designed to maintain order and ensure the smooth conduct of the elections.

The administration warned that any violation of the order would be dealt with under the relevant provisions of the Assam Excise Act and Rules, as well as section 135(c) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. This section of the Act pertains to the penalisation of activities that may disrupt the electoral process.
