IMD Predicts Further Rainfall As Guwahati Sinks After Downpour

GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted further rainfall for Guwahati and parts of Assam till May 5, warning of moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in isolated areas. The report adds woes to Guwahati’s situation, as on Monday, April 28, parts of the city suffered from severe waterlogging following early morning thunderstorms and intense rainfall.

Strong winds, reaching speeds of up to 60–70 kmph, battered the city at dawn, leading to widespread power outages, waterlogging, and severe traffic congestion. Daily life was thrown into disarray as residents struggled to commute to offices and schools amid flooded roads and blacked-out neighbourhoods.

The IMD attributed these adverse conditions to a low-pressure trough extending from central Uttar Pradesh to North Bangladesh and a cyclonic circulation persisting over central Assam. Light to moderate rainfall has been recorded across Assam over the past 24 hours, with isolated areas experiencing heavy downpours.

Meanwhile, authorities in Guwahati have been placed on alert, with further heavy rainfall expected throughout the coming days. The local forecast indicates that maximum and minimum temperatures will likely remain around 34°C and 23°C respectively, under partly cloudy skies with intermittent spells of rain or thunderstorms.

The IMD continues to monitor the evolving weather situation, advising residents to exercise caution and limit outdoor movement during periods of intense rainfall.
