GUWAHATI: Two more individuals have been sentenced in connection with the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) case in Assam. The Special Guwahati Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) delivered the sentences on Thursday, January 30.

Mufti Suleiman Ali and Imran Hossen were convicted under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P)A) in case RC-02/2022/NIA/GUW. Seven other accused individuals were previously convicted and sentenced in the same case.
Ali and Hossen received six months' simple imprisonment and a ₹500 fine (with an additional 14 days of simple imprisonment in case of non-payment) under Section 120(B) of the IPC. They were also sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for a period already served (two years, eight months, and 21 days) under Sections 20/38/39 of the UA(P)A.
The case, registered in March 2022, pertains to an ABT module operating in Barpeta district of Assam. The module was affiliated with the banned international terrorist organisation, Al Qaeda in the Indian Sub-Continent (AQIS), and was led by Bangladeshi national Saiful Islam, also known as Haroon Rashid.
The NIA originally filed chargesheets against eight accused in August 2022, and subsequently filed a supplementary chargesheet against two more in August 2023.
Further investigation and trial in the case are ongoing.
