Section 144 Imposed In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The past two days have been quite eventful in Guwahati with several rallies and protests carried out in the city against the controversial issue of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.  

In lieu of the same, the Assam government today has issued Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the east police district of Guwahati with immediate effect.

Ramandeep Kaur, DCP, East Police District, Guwahati informed that the Section 144 will cover areas under Dispur, Bhangagarh, Basistha, Hatigaon, Sonapur and Khetri police stations.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) empowers a magistrate to prohibit an assembly of more than five people in an area. According to sections 141-149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the maximum punishment for engaging in rioting is rigorous imprisonment for 3 years and/or fine.

The city had witnessed notable rallies including protests from 70 organisations like KMSS in front of Janata Bhawan and artists taking out a torchlight rally in Chandmari amongst several other protests.
