SC asks ECI to clarify on names in voters list but not included in final NRC

The Supreme Court today, March 12 asked the Election Commission of India (EC) to clarify what action will be taken by them if a person’s name is not included in the final Assam NRC, which will be published on July 31, but the name is included in the electoral roll.

The EC was asked to give data about addition and deletion of names in the voters list as revised in the month of January for 2017, 2018 and 2019. The SC bench comprising of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justices S.A. Nazeer and Sanjiv Khanna have asked for the answers by March 28.

Assam’s Chief Electoral Officer, Mukesh Sahu on March 11 said that people whose name appears in the electoral rolls can vote.

There has been speculation that 40 lakh people whose names did not appear in the final NRC draft published by the government last year would not be allowed to vote.

Assam is supposed to elect 14 Lok Sabha members in three phases (April 11, 18 and 23). The vote count will be held on May 23.
