Guwahati: The gamosa will now have a distinguished identity. It has been approved for the geographical identity tag, which is used to identify agricultural, natural, or manufactured goods originating in the said area and should have a special quality or characteristics unique to the geographical indication.

The application for the Gamosa was made by Institute of Handicraft Development in Golaghat.

The article is of great significance for the people of Assam. The word gamosa originated from the Sanskrit word, gatro marjoni, meaning fabric used to wipe the body after taking a bath.

Earlier, the Boka Chaul (mud rice) has received the GI tag by the government of India’s Intellectual Property India (IPI) body. This is the only product after Muga silk, Joha rice and Tezpur litchi to have earned the GI tag.
