GUWAHATI: Boycotting the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, differently-abled people from across the state staged a protest in Dighalipukhuri, over Assam's government's failure to fulfill their various long-pending demands.
Under the banner of Pratibandhi Suraksha Sangstha Assam (PSSA), several organisations protested and chanted slogans against the unfulfilled promises of the government.
The organisations have been demanding Rs 1000 as monthly allowance, announced by the state govt last year. Also, they have asked for action against police personnel involved in man-handling them while they were protesting at Dispur Last Gate on October 5.
The protestors have been demanding advertisement for 4419 posts meant for persons with disabilities that are lying vacant.
“We have 21 demands. Moreover, as per RPD Act, 4% reservation for persons with disabilities should be done. The Assam Government on 1st December, 2017 had identified 4419 posts, but till date nothing has been done,” said one of the participants in the protest.

Now, the organisations have given an ultimatum to the govt till December 10, after which they will launch a massive state-wide protest.
“On 5th October, when we protested, we were man-handled by the police. We have demanded strict action against Amitabh Basumatary (ADCP), but nothing has been done,” said the protestors.
Ironically, on 2017 observing the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu launched Deen Dayal Divyang Sahajya Yojna in Assam for the benefit of Divyangjan.
