Pay fine for smoking cigarettes at public places in Guwahati

Guwahati: The Guwahati city police has started a campaign to stop people from smoking and consuming tobacco products at public places.

Those found offending will be charged under the 'Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act', 2003 and can be fined or jailed. The Act prohibits smoking of tobacco in public places, except in special smoking zones in hotels, restaurants and airports and open spaces.

The city police has started this campaign from Ganeshguri. The fine can range from Rs. 200 to Rs. 5000 and the offender can be jailed for up to 5 years.

Guwahati police is going to continue this operation in other places of the city.
