Guwahati: Paltan Bazar being a transit point for everyone coming to the Northeast has several hotels and restaurants. However, customers in the past have complained that the food served in many hotels are not up to the mark.

On 19th May, P. Dutta, a friend of D. Barman, Officer-In-Charge of Paltan Bazar police station visited Guwahati. Dutta after meeting his friend, went to a nearby eatery, Samrat Punjabi Dhaba, located at Paltan Bazar and ordered a plate of rice with mutton.

Dutta was in for a surprise when the food was served on his table. “They took around 15 minutes to serve the food and when I tried eating the mutton, I felt like vomiting. The food was stale and spoilt and when I complained to the hotel staff, they behaved rudely with me and told me that it’s what they had to offer,” said Dutta.

A furious and hungry Dutta immediately left the dhaba and registered a complaint at his the Paltan Bazar Police Station.

Acting on the complaint, Paltan Bazar police immediately reached the dhaba and picked up the manager (Sanjay) for questioning.

“The food will be sent to the food inspector and then, a case will be registered if required,” said a source in the Paltan Bazar police station.

The source also revealed that Food Inspectors seldom inspect the quality of the food served in the hotels and restaurants at Paltan Bazar, therefore the hotel owners do not maintain any defined quality or hygiene standards. Most of the hotels serve unhygienic food, the source claimed.
