Assam All Set For Final Phase LS Polls


GUWAHATI: The last four Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam are all set for the third and final phase of polls slated on Tuesday, May  7. Among the four constituencies – Guwahati, Kokrajhar (ST), Dhubri and Barpeta - area wise Guwahati is the smallest and Kokrajhar the largest.

But, Kokrajhar has the lowest number of voters - 14,84,571- and Dhubri the largest with 26,60,827. Barpeta has 19,66,847 voters and Guwahati 20,36,846.

Altogether 9,516 polling stations have been set up, said Assam Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel while addressing a press conference at Janata Bhawan, on Monday. 
The number of voters going to cast their votes on Tuesday is 81,49,091--  male 41,00544, female 40,48436 and  third gender 111.

There are 1,529 voters above 100 years of age; the number of new voters is 2,10,177. 
Over 3,000 EVMs, over 3,000 VVPATAs and over 3,000 Control Units have been additionally kept ready.

There are 47 candidates; 326 polling stations will be manned by women and there will be 84 model polling stations. According to Goel “assured minimum facilities” are provided in all the polling stations. 


Polling will begin at 7 am and conclude at 5 pm. All eyes will be on the prestigious Guwahati seat where both BJP and Congress have put up woman nominees – Bijuli Kalita Medhi and Mira Borthakur Goswami respectively. 


The other prominent candidates are AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, who is seeking re-election for the fourth successive term from Dhubri, Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain, eight-time Asom Gana Parishad legislator Phanibhushan Choudhury and CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar.

Barpeta has the highest of 14 candidates and Guwahati the lowest of eight in the fray while six women are contesting in the final phase. 
The BJP has put up only one candidate in this phase for the Guwahati seat, while its alliance partners AGP are contesting in two – Dhubri and Barpeta – and the UPPL in Kokrajhar (ST).
