Income Tax officials sent to 3 days police remand

A CBI Court in Guwahati on Tuesday sent four persons including two Income Tax officers to three days remand for further quizzing.

The Income tax officials are Pratap Das, Income Tax Officer (Audit) and Swetabh suman, Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit).

The officers were arrested last Friday for their alleged involvement in a criminal conspiracy to provide undue favours to a trader from Jorhat.

Reportedly, CBI has also sought permission from the court to collect their voice samples for further investigation.

According to a press release, CBI received information that during 2017-18, Suman entered into a criminal conspiracy with income tax officer Pratap Das, Guwahati-based lawyers Ramesh Goenka and Amit Goenka and Jorhat-based businessman, Suresh Agarwala, who has an office in Guwahati and some other persons.

The press release alleged that Suman agreed to show undue favour to one Suresh Agarwala by passing a favourable order in an appeal arising out of assessment done in respect of one of the shell companies of Suresh Agarwala. The undue favour, according to the press release, was made “abusing their official position.”

Earlier, in a press release issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), it had been mentioned that two of the accused involved in the case, ie Ramesh Goenka and Amit Goenka are Guwahati-based Chartered Accountants. However, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) later issued a clarification stating that the accused are not Chartered Accountants as their names do not appear in the register of members maintained by the ICAI, the regulator of the profession of CA.
