GUWAHATI: Students at Gauhati University gathered in protest on March 27, demanding the removal of Exam Controller Kandarpa Sarma over allegations of misconduct. The protest, led by the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) and University Law College Students’ Union (ULCSU), was triggered by what students claim was repeated misbehavior by Sarma, with complaints going unanswered by the administration.

Earlier in the day, two student representatives had gone to meet Sarma regarding examination-related concerns. However, they alleged that he misbehaved with them instead of addressing their queries. Frustrated by the response, the students marched to the Vice Chancellor’s office, calling for immediate action.

Talking to GPlus, a student leader from PGSU said, "There have been multiple complaints about his behavior, yet no action was taken. We went to the administration several times, but they ignored us. Yesterday's incident was the final trigger."

When the students reached the Vice Chancellor’s office, they were assured that a decision would be made within ten minutes. However, as time passed without any response, one of the students knocked on the door to remind the VC of his commitment.

What happened next took them by surprise.

"Instead of addressing our concerns, the Vice Chancellor got angry and started shouting, saying ‘Hit me, hit me!’ We were shocked. We had come to talk, not to fight," a student present at the scene told GPlus.

The students, taken aback by the reaction, continued their protest, insisting on action against Kandarpa Sarma.

Following the protest, the Registrar’s Office issued an official notice (Ref. VCO/GU/Emer/2025/01-10) on March 27, stating that a committee had been formed to investigate the allegations against the Exam Controller. The committee will also include representatives from PGSU and ULCSU to ensure a fair review of the case.

Until the investigation is completed, the university announced that all examination-related matters would be handled by the Registrar.

"The committee will submit its report within a week," the notice stated.

While the formation of a committee is a step forward, students say they will wait to see if real action follows.

"We will not step back if this issue is brushed aside again. If the university does not take strict action, we will continue our protest," said a student leader.
