Fraudster Arrested In Guwahati’s Geetanagar For Duping Women Through Dating Apps

 

GUWAHATI: A man accused of defrauding multiple women under false pretences was arrested in the Geetanagar area of Guwahati on Tuesday, April 1. Identified as Deepjyoti Bora, also known as Bitu Sen, the accused hails from Lahowal in Dibrugarh.

Bhangagarh police, who carried out the arrest, revealed that the accused managed to dupe at least ten women,  cheating a total of approximately ₹50 lakh. During the arrest, officers seized four mobile phones, a vehicle, cheque books, seven credit and debit cards, passbooks, and official documents, including a driving licence and PAN card registered under both his real name and alias.

Speaking to GPlus, an official from Bhangagarh police station said, "A fraudster was arrested from Geetanagar. The accused had been using various dating apps, including Aisle, Tinder, and TrulyMadly, to target financially stable women, particularly divorcees and those who were separated. He would gain their trust, enter into relationships, and eventually convince them to lend him money before disappearing.

A case had been registered against Bora in September 2024 for allegedly deceiving a woman with false promises of marriage. Many other women have approached for help who were defrauded. 

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities expect to take him into custody for seven days for further interrogation.
