Gauhati HC Directs Jal Board To File Affidavit On Progress Of Drinking Water Supply Work

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, directed the Managing Director of Guwahati Jal Board to file an affidavit within two weeks, stating the progress made in the work of supplying potable water to Guwahati residents, as per reports.

Reports stated that the affidavit should include the timeline for completion of the scheme(s), availability of funds for execution of the projects and interim arrangements, if any, made for supplying drinking water to the residents.

The bench, comprising of Justice Suman Shyam and Justice Susmita Phukan Khaund was hearing a petition filed by ‘Chiriyakhana Path Jyestho Nagarik Sanshta’, a senior citizens’ forum, flagging the burning issue of the potable drinking water crisis in the city.

The court observed that “despite a number of projects being floated by the government, the residents are yet to get proper supply of drinking water.”

The South Central Guwahati Water Project with 191 million litres per day, which is the biggest water project, was partially inaugurated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in December last year (2022).

The South Central project will be fully commissioned by March 2023 and the South West water project will be fully commissioned by 2024-end, as per reports.
