One Upen Dihingia, a Constable of the Assam Police, died of high fever at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) after they were reportedly made to sleep on the floor. Dihingia was a part of the 600 member strong team of security personnel, who were deployed all over the State for the President’s maiden visit to the Northeast.

It is being alleged that they were not provided with proper facilities for sleeping, eating and had to drink unsafe water. One of the security personnel speaking to G Plus under condition of anonymity said, “We had to sleep on the floor in this winter. The facilities provided to us were shabby and ill-maintained. The toilets were also in a terrible condition.”

According to sources, some of the personnel were accommodated at the Agriculture Warehouse, Rupnagar where they had to sleep on the floor.

The death of the Constable has raised questions on the living conditions provided to security personnel and need for a proper investigation.
