ECI Announces Rajya Sabha Polls For September 3, Two Seats Vacant In Assam

 

GUWAHATI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled elections for September 3 to fill 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in different states, including Assam. 

These vacancies have arisen due to the recent transition of several members from Rajya Sabha to Lok Sabha such as Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal and Jyotiraditya Scindia.
Assam’s seats fell vacant after the election of sitting members Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Sarbananda Sonowal to the Lok Sabha.

The ECI has outlined the election process, with the official notification set to be released on August 14. Prospective candidates must submit their nomination papers by August 21. The elections for the 12 seats will be held on September 3, with results expected to be announced on the same day. The deadlines for withdrawal of nominations are August 26 and 27.

The vacant seats are distributed as follows:
- Assam: 2 seats
- Maharashtra: 2 seats
- Bihar: 2 seats
- Madhya Pradesh: 1 seat
- Haryana: 1 seat
- Rajasthan: 1 seat
- Odisha: 1 seat
- Telangana: 1 seat
- Tripura: 1 seat
