Domestic violence on the rise in Assam

GUWAHATI: Based on official records released by the Assam Police, there has been an increase in instances of domestic abuse in Assam. 

In 2005, 2200 cases were recorded across the state, whereas in 2018, there has been a sharp increase with 11,999 cases recorded. 

There is an average of 32 cases of “cruelty by husband” recorded on a daily basis.

The majority of these cases were reported in the districts Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinksukia, Darrang, Udalguri, Kokrajhar and Sonitpur. 

Based on a TOI report, cases of dowry-induced violence are also on the rise in Assam with 166 women allegedly killed by their in-laws for dowry in 2018.
