GUWAHATI: Kalapahar Bye Lane in Guwahati has turned into a hub of public frustration as road construction materials dumped by contractors have blocked almost the entire stretch. Residents report that 80% of the road is blocked, leaving only a narrow 20% open for public use.

Speaking to GPlus, a resident expressed their frustration, stating, “It is really disgusting how authorities fail to think of public accessibility.” The narrow bye lane, which is crucial for local commuters, has now become a hazard, forcing pedestrians and vehicles to squeeze through the remaining open portion.

The situation is made worse by the timing of the material dumping, which occurred in the evening, coinciding with peak traffic hours. This has led to severe congestion and inconvenience for residents returning home after a long day.

An official from the Public Works Department (PWD), while addressing the issue, said, “Narrow lanes are a bit difficult. When materials are unloaded, it gets blocked, but that is just a temporary issue. Ultimately, it is for the development of the road.”

However, residents argue that the lack of planning and communication highlights the negligence of the authorities in prioritising public convenience during development work. They are demanding immediate measures to ensure that construction activities do not disrupt their daily lives.

The Kalapahar Bye Lane incident serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by unorganised construction work in Guwahati, leaving citizens to bear the brunt of developmental negligence.
