With the upcoming panchayat elections, security concerns surrounding the Class X State Board examinations have forced the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) to cut short the duration of the exams.
The exam that is slated to start from mid-February, will now be conducted over a period of three weeks instead of four-weeks.
"Since a large number of officials from police and district administrations will be busy with the panchayat elections, we need to wrap up the board exams as soon as possible. There are plenty of factors for which SEBA is planning to complete the exam process soon. The board wants to give teachers adequate time for evaluation of answer scripts. Besides, there is also a thrust to conclude exam season before important festivals in March-April," said Nayan Jyoti Sharma, Controller of Examinations to a media house here in the city.
There will be breaks between major subjects, Sharma said. It is likely that there won't be any gaps between elective subjects. The exam schedule now depends on the panchayat poll dates.
"If the state election commissioner does not announce poll dates by next week, the board may declare the exam schedule anyway to prevent an unusual delay in announcing the time-table," a SEBA official said.
