GUWAHATI: The meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will be held on December 31, Monday.

The BJP-led NDA government will most probably bring the Bill to parliament before the government term expires in 2019.

This Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible for citizenship.

The JPC’s term ends on January 2, 2018, and it should be noted that the JPC will also discuss the 13 amendments that were moved by the members on 31 December. The current ruling BJP party at the Centre and Assam have already clarified that the party will support the Bill and is not in favour of any dilution of the controversial bill.
