The announcement was made during his visit to Sootea Police Station in Biswanath District on September 3, where he paid homage to the courageous individuals who raised the national flag during the Quit India Movement in 1942.
During his address, CM Sarma highlighted that on August 20, 1942, inspired by a national resolution to hoist the Indian flag at every police station, the people of Sootea, led by the late Biman Chandra Bora, gathered in solidarity and unfurled the tricolour at Sootea Police Station. This act of defiance marked a pivotal moment in the region’s history.
The Chief Minister also stated that Sootea Day will be celebrated annually with full government support, involving active participation from the local community. He also unveiled plans for a heritage monument at the Sootea Police Station, with a budget of ₹5 crore allocated for the project. The monument will reflect the region's rich heritage and honour the leaders who played a key role in the historic flag-hoisting event.
The project will include a garden and statues of the leaders involved in the 1942 flag hoisting, with detailed plans to be finalised soon. The announcement was made in the presence of MP Ranjit Dutta, MLA Padma Hazarika, Principal Secretary B Kalyan Chakravarthy, and ADGP Munna Prasad.
Sootea Day will stand as a symbol of Assam’s vital role in India’s freedom movement, serving as a source of pride and celebration for the people of the region.
