GUWAHATI: The Assam government has declared public holidays on May 2 and 7 in connection with the upcoming panchayat elections. The notification was issued by the General Administration Department following a letter from the Assam State Election Commission on Friday, April 11.

According to the notification, all government and non-government offices, educational institutions, banks, tea gardens, and business establishments located in polling areas will remain closed on the respective polling days. The measure has been implemented to allow all eligible voters to participate in the election.
Polling for the first phase on May 2 will be held in districts including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Bishwanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi.
The second phase on May 7 will cover Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Darrang.
The notification further instructed wide circulation of the information through official and public channels to ensure awareness among all concerned stakeholders.
As per the order, the holidays are declared under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
