GUWAHATI: Thousands of school teachers today attempted to gherao the Chief Minister's residence in Guwahati. Upon failing to do so, they protested at Udayan Kristi in Lokhra.
The primary demands of the teachers led by the Assam State Primary Teachers’ Association include instituting the headmaster position for Lower Primary (LP) schools. Along with that, they are urging for graduate grade pay.
"The government has assured us but did not do anything regarding the matter. We are performing the duties of the headmaster, yet we don't have any official designation. We will quit doing the duties of the headmaster from now on and will only teach," said a member from ASPTA.

The APSTA claimed that they have had many discussions with the government without any solution. As a result, they have now resorted to protest.
Meanwhile, a highly placed official in the Education Department has revealed to G Plus that the concerns have been heard. "We have decided to re-designate them as in-charge headmaster and have also planned to increase their allowance," said the official. The Rs 300 allowance is set to be increased and the same will be decided by the finance department. As for the grade pay, the matter has been forwarded to the Finance Department.
