GUWAHATI: A discussion was recently held in Guwahati regarding the use of drones for agriculture and plantation crops monitoring.

Dr. Manzul Kumar Hazarika, Director of Geoinformatics Center of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) stated that these unmanned aerial vehicles known as drones could be a great tool for monitoring crop production and agriculture.

On speaking of some of the benefits of using this technology, Dr Hazarika informed that drones can be quickly and easily deployed. However, the most beneficial factor of these drones is data acquisition at a very spatial resolution with high accuracy.

These unmanned aerial vehicles will contribute to a great extent in the agricultural field and in tea gardens for minimalising of pesticides and insecticides. These systems are flown just one metre over the bushes so that the pesticides don’t reach non-targeted areas.

The advisor of the North Eastern Tea Association (NETA), Bidyananda Barkakoty asserted that the possibilities of using drones will help in tea plantations for great surveillance, crop monitoring and crop management.
