GUWAHATI: Two mountaineers from the Assam Mountaineering Association (AMA) successfully scaled an unnamed and unclimbed peak in the Ladakh region at 10:16 AM on Monday, April 21. The peak, standing at an altitude of 6,365 metres, was conquered by Jayanta Nath and Shekhar Bordoloi, members of AMA’s Triple Peak Expedition team.

The summit has marked a historic first, as it is the first time that an expedition from Assam has undertaken an ascent of three virgin peaks above 6,000 metres in the Ladakh Himalayas. The initiative further included a proposal to name one of these peaks “Lachit Kangri”, in tribute to Mahabeer Lachit Borphukan, the legendary military commander of Assam. If approved, this would be the first instance of a Himalayan peak being named after a historical figure from the state.
Later in the day, two more mountaineers from the same expedition team, Bhaskar Barman and Surajit Ronghang, also reached the summit of the same peak.
In parallel to this mountaineering feat, a four-member team comprising Madhurjya Manjuri Borah, Trishna Ramchiyari, Babita Goswami, and Angshuman Bora successfully completed the Kyagar La trekking route, reaching an altitude of 5,600 metres. A novice team is also carrying out a separate trek to the same pass as part of the larger expedition.
The 19-member expedition has been sponsored by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Welfare, Government of Assam.
