The recent incident came to light when Rashida Khatun submitted her nomination for the post of ward member from 5 No. Aironjongla Part-III, under the 70 No. Bhashani Char Gaon Panchayat.

Khatun is the wife of Nur Alom Sheikh, 32, a resident of Aironjongla Part-III under Dhubri Police Station. Sheikh is a key accused in Dhubri Police Station Case No. 119/2025, booked under sections 21(a), 22(b), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He has remained under law enforcement surveillance for his alleged involvement in regional narcotics trafficking.

A second case has also been filed against Sheikh under Section 305(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), further complicating his legal situation. While the nature of the fresh case has not been fully disclosed, officials have confirmed that the charges are serious and the investigation is ongoing.

Khatun’s decision to contest the elections independently has drawn attention from both political observers and the local community. Some residents have viewed her candidature as an effort to influence local governance and mitigate the family’s public image, while others have interpreted it as a personal political decision made amid adversity.
