GUWAHATI: The spectre of flooding looms over Lakhimpur in Assam as the gates of the Ranganadi hydropower project have been unsealed, intensifying concerns over potential inundation.
The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) has decided to discharge excess water from the reservoir, contributing an additional 161 cubic meters per second into the Ranganadi River.
This surge in water flow has caused the water level to surge to a critical 94 metre, a mere 6 metre shy of the hazardous threshold. The situation is now teetering on the edge, with an increase of just 1 metre capable of breaching the danger mark and worsening the already dire circumstances.
In response, both local residents and authorities are reportedly on heightened alert, closely monitoring the evolving scenario. The aim is to ensure timely evacuation plans and necessary precautions are in place to safeguard lives and mitigate potential damage.
