Assam: Dhekiajuli Police Station OC Transferred, Women Commando Battalion Deployed Amid Turmoil


GUWAHATI: The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhekiajuli Police Station in Sonitpur DEF has been transferred following the recent gang rape of a minor girl and the unrest that followed in the area.

According to a recent order by the Assam Police, Inspector Raja Sarkar, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dhekiajuli Police Station in, has been transferred to the CID headquarters in Guwahati to fill an existing vacancy. Inspector Dhanjit Haloi, formerly with the BIEO, Assam, will replace Sarkar.

Additionally, to address the situation, two contingents of the Women Commando Battalion and two contingents of the Assam Police Battalion have been deployed in Dhekiajuli for area domination and to take action against miscreants, informed Assam DGP GP Singh.

Also, IGP L&O  PK Bhuyan visited Dhekiajuli earlier on June 30 and interacted with stakeholders from different communities.

This follows a heinous incident on June 24, where a 15-year-old girl was gang-raped in Dhekiajuli. The victim, a class 10 student, was reportedly abducted while returning home from tuition. The police have arrested one Shahidul Islam based on the victim’s statement, while four of his associates remain at large.

In the aftermath of the incident, massive protests erupted in front of Dhekiajuli Police Station, with locals and various organisations demanding severe punishment to the perpetrators.
