Assam: Five Arrested For Alleged Gang Rape Of Mentally Challenged Woman In Karimganj

 

GUWAHATI: Five persons have been arrested for the alleged gang rape of a mentally ill woman on Tuesday, July 2, in Karimganj.

The incident occurred on the night of June 29-30, when the victim, a woman with mental health issues, was reportedly wandering the streets in the Kayasthagram area. The accused forcibly took her in an autorickshaw and brutally assaulted and raped her. Upon receiving information about the crime, a probe was ordered, which led to the arrest of Fakhr Mia, Abdul Mastaq, Shamim Uddin, Riyaz Uddin, and Pranesh Sharma.

Talking to GPlus, Partha Protim Das, the Superintendent of Police, Karimganj said, “We arrested them based on the evidence. Also, we have recovered the CCTV footage which shows the suspects dragging the victim.”

During the police investigation, led by SP Das, the accused confessed to their actions. The arrested individuals now face charges under the relevant sections of the law. The police are continuing their investigation to gather further evidence. More details are awaited.
