GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has voiced its dislike against the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for renewing its ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and deciding to go for a pre-poll alliance with the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls.
Questioning the AGP, Samujjal Bhattacharya, chief advisor of AASU said that AGP’s opposition to the Bill earlier was nothing but ‘drama.’
Earlier, AGP had broken ties with BJP regarding the latter’s support for the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. AGP president, Atul Bora and his two party colleagues, Keshab Mahanta and Phanibhushan Choudhury had resigned from the state cabinet over the Bill on January 9.
Bhattacharya said that AGP leaders must explain to the people of Assam their reason for renewing their ties with BJP even though BJP will bring back the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill if voted to power.
However, it should be noted that this decision to form an alliance again has not been taken well by many AGP leaders. Two senior AGP leaders, Lachit Bordoloi and Hemen Borah have submitted their resignations.
It should be noted that BJP general secretary and in charge of Northeast, Ram Madhav and NEDA convenor, Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced the alliance on March 12 after a late night meeting with AGP leaders in Guwahati.
