AASU Flexes Muscles to threaten Commoners; Bandh over Citizenship Amendment Bill affects Assam

GUWAHATI: In a statewide Assam Bandh called by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) over the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 being cleared by the Cabinet, the AASU has taken an aggressive stance to ensure that the bandh is observed strongly.

Several incidents of vandalism were reported from all around the state where cars were destroyed and commuters harassed and attacked. More than 10 such incidents have been reported in Guwahati alone.

Speaking to G Plus on the vandalism by AASU members across Assam, AASU Advisor, Samujjal Bhattacharya said, ‘AASU hasn’t called a bandh in several years. In recent times too, there have been several calls for bandhs and people continued with their normal routine. Cars would move around like it was a normal day. People had gotten used to bandhs being unimportant. Now that we have called for it, we are trying to enforce it aggressively and so a bit of violence is going to be seen.’
