“A 15-Year-Old Girl Can Reproduce, Why Increase Marriage Age,” asks Congress MLA Sajjan Singh

GUWAHATI: Former minister and Congress leader Sajjan Singh Verma while reacting to an announcement made by  Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday that the minimum marriageable age of women will be increased from 18-21 said that there is no point of increasing the marriage age of girls when they can reproduce at the age of 15.

Sajjan Singh Verma said, "Doctors say that even a 15-years-old girl can reproduce, then what is the need to increase the marriage age of girls to 21 years? Has Shivraj become a bigger doctor?"

Sajjan Singh Verma received backlash and was also asked to apologize in public for his comment.

"Did he forget that his party’s president is a woman? Priyanka Gandhi is also a woman? I urge Sonia Gandhi to direct Verma to apologize in public and sack him from the party," PTI quoted Madhya Pradesh BJP’s media panelist Neha Bagga as saying.
