Showing an increasing trend in the liquor consumption habit in the city, the data procured from the Kamrup Metro Excise Superintendent’s office reveals that the city, from 1st January till 30th October 2017, consumed 1,08,90,662.822 bulk litres of liquor. But wonder where the empty bottles land into?
During the recent desiltation of the city drains, a move to prep up the city to face the brunt of monsoon flash floods, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) revealed that about 70-80 per cent of the retrieved solid wastes are alcohol bottles.
“Most of the drains in Guwahati are filled with liquor bottles. It is a tedious work to clean up the drains, and also a never ending process. We clean up the drains, only to see them get filled with alcohol bottles and plastic bottles within next few days,” Utpal sarmah Boruah, GIS Specialist, GMC said to G Plus.
