GUWAHATI: In a recent anti-smuggling operation in Assam’s Mangaldoi, police rescued 19 dogs—both pets and strays—that had been packed into sacks and locked in a room, reportedly for illegal sale. Acting on a tip-off, law enforcement agencies initiated a search, leading to the discovery and rescue of the dogs.

Four individuals, identified as Milic Marak, Ina Changma, Star Marak, and Malu Changma, all from Assam, were reportedly arrested during the operation. The accused later admitted to their involvement in the smuggling scheme, as per reports. The raid, which took place in Darrang, uncovered the traffickers’ plan to transport the dogs to Nagaland, where they reportedly intended to sell them for meat.

An Assam-based animal advocacy group raised awareness about the incident on social media, noting that dog trafficking is an ongoing problem in the region and appears to be growing each year.
