Zubeen Garg severely criticizes Assam CM in an open letter on Facebook

GUWAHATI: Renowned singer, Zubeen Garg has severely criticized Assam Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal for the Controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Garg posted a letter on Facebook on January 8 addressed to Sonowal.

“The Citizenship Bill will never be accepted. I have been hearing since my childhood that Bangladeshis will be weeded out of Assam and it saddens me that the people who were a part of the agitation against illegal foreigners are now part of the government and pushing for the passage of the Bill,” the singer wrote in the letter.

He added that he is saddened to see that Sonowal who was once called ‘Jatiya Nayak’ is now given the tag of ‘Jatiya Khalnayak.’

“There are more important issues to look after rather than sitting beside Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and clapping his hands. He (Sonowal) might not be ashamed of his act, we are,” Zubeen wrote.

It should be noted that the AASU (All Assam Students Union) conferred the tag of ‘Jatiya Nayak’ on the then member of Lok Sabha when the Supreme Court had struck down the Illegal Migrants Act in 2005 as a verdict of the ‘Sarbananda Sonowal vs Union of India’ Case.

Zubeen also writes in his letter that Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, the Joint Parliamentary Committee and Sonowal have all “fooled the people of Assam.” he further urged the government to rethink the bill.
