49 Stolen Mobile Phones Recovered In Guwahati; 5 Arrested

 

GUWAHATI: Guwahati Police have recovered 49 stolen mobile phones and arrested five persons in connection with a spate of snatching incidents across the city. The arrests were made following an investigation into a case of snatching reported on April 24, where a woman was robbed of her handbag containing a mobile phone and Rs 200 in cash by two men on a scooter at Survey Samannay Path, Dispur.

The suspects were apprehended during a search operation conducted by the Dispur Police Station and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of East Police District, covering both Guwahati and the Tamulpur area. The investigation led to the registration of a case under sections 356, 379, and 323 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The arrested individuals have been identified as Rupam Ali (18) from Marimunlaman, Milanpur, Morigaon, who has a criminal history, having been arrested previously in multiple cases related to theft and snatching, Dipak Barman (18), from 1 No. Sualpur, Tamulpur, Rahul Sutradhar (21), from Rupuhi, Barpeta, Nisha Barman (38), from Village No. 1 Suagpur, Naokata, Tamulpur, and Rahul Das (32), from Chandrapur, Kawli, Tamulpur .

The investigation revealed that Ali, Dipak Barman, and Sutradhar operated as a snatching team, targeting mobile phones and handbags in the greater Guwahati area. After snatching, they would sell the stolen items to Das, who runs a shop in the Tamulpur district. Nisha Barman acted as an intermediary, facilitating the transfer of stolen goods between the snatchers and Das.

During the operation, police also recovered two stolen scooters. The scooters were linked to earlier theft cases registered at Bharalumukh PS and Geetanagar PS, both under section 379 of the IPC.

The interrogation of the arrested suspects has revealed additional names involved in the snatching ring, and police are currently pursuing these individuals. It is believed that this gang is responsible for a recent series of snatching incidents in Guwahati.

Necessary legal action is being taken against the arrested suspects.
